Man charged over newborn baby’s death 6 years ago

A contractor who was allegedly responsible for a hospital gas mix-up that led to a baby’s death in Sydney’s west six years ago has been charged with manslaughter.

Emergency services were called to Bankstown Lidcombe Hospital and notified of the death of a newborn baby boy in July 2016.

The death was the result of a gas mix-up, where 100 per cent of nitrous oxide was administered instead of oxygen.

On Monday, Christopher Turner, 61, was arrested at Bankstown Police Station and charged with manslaughter by criminal negligence and cause grievous bodily harm by negligent act or omission over another child who suffered brain damage.

Turner faced Bankstown Court, with his family there to support him.

His lawyer said the 61-year-old was now working as an elevator technician and has no criminal history.

The court heard Turner is on a number of medications and had suffered two heart attacks in the past two years.

His solicitor argued he needs to be free to care for his health and help his wife pay the bills.

The magistrate however was concerned if released on bail, any further alleged negligence could put others at risk.

“The nature of the charge is he had a duty to do, he now has a duty to people who are vulnerable,” the judge said.

Turner’s lawyer confirmed he doesn’t install the lifts but works in the warehouse.

He was freed on bail. Turner will return to court in October.
