A huge storm, coupled with vicious winds, battered the state overnight, leaving tens of thousands without power.

Those near the Traralgon Creek area were told to evacuate about 10.30am.

In the footage of the garage being flooded, water can be seen seeping in at 7.11am.

Within minutes, the murky brown water has half-filled the garage.

Moments later, the entire garage is submerged.

The force of the water can be seen pushing a four-wheel drive to the roof of the garage.

By lunchtime Thursday, emergency services had already been called to a dozen flood rescues in Gippsland.

“We can’t emphasise enough that driving into floodwaters is the greatest risk you can take,” Victorian SES chief Tim Wiebusch said.

“That is the number one thing where we see fatalities during flooding.”

The SES has responded to about 6000 calls for help and it’s expected to take days to clear the backlog.

The crisis earlier turned fatal, with a man found deceased in his submerged car in Woodside.

Two volunteers have also been hospitalised.

Emergency authorities are strongly recommending residents, workers and holiday-makers near Traralgon Creek evacuate after parts of west Gippsland recorded rainfall totals over 270mm.
