Investigation after dad, umpire injured following junior football fight

A South Australian dad and his umpire son have allegedly been assaulted following a brawl at a junior girl’s football match.

Chaos erupted between players on the field at Edwardstown Memorial Oval just after 6.30pm on Sunday.

Witnesses say punches were thrown between girls from the Edwardstown and Ingle Farm football clubs, before angry parents and spectators became involved.

Video from the heated aftermath of the fight shows players pushing and swearing at one another as umpires try to disperse them.

A witness, who was also the father of a 14-year-old umpire, had been filming the fight when he claims he was set upon.

Team officials can be seen walking over to the witness, yelling at him to stop.

Another man then allegedly grabbed him from behind and wrestled him into a headlock.

His umpire son then ran over to try and help, but claims he too became a victim.

The teenager was allegedly punched several times by an angry parent and pushed into a bench and left with cuts to the face and a bruised lip.

SA Premier Steven Marshall said the behaviour was “abhorrent”.

“This is a very disturbing story,” Marshall told reporters on Monday.

“It’s completely unacceptable to have any violence in sport, especially at a junior level.

“It’s abhorrent, it shouldn’t happen.”

Investigation underway

Following the incident, Edwardstown Football Club said none of its players, parents, supporters or officials were involved in the incident.

“There are various reports in today’s media about an incident at yesterday’s U17.5 girls game at Edwardstown Oval,” the club’s Board of Directors said in a statement on Facebook.

“This involved a boundary umpire and two members of the crowd.

“We wish to state that no Edwardstown parents, supporters, officials or players were involved in this incident.

“SANFL and SAPOL are currently undertaking an investigation.”

SA’s National Football League also issued a statement, confirming SA police are investigating the incident, which occurred during the Sammy D Foundation anti-violence round.

“The SANFL wishes to confirm that it is investigating incidents relating to player and spectator behaviour during a SANFL Juniors Under 17.5 Girls Division 2 match on Sunday, May 23,” the organisation said in a statement on Monday.

“In accordance with SANFL Juniors policy, the match between Edwardstown Football Club and Ingle Farm Football Club held at Edwardstown Memorial Oval was called off by the field umpire midway through the final quarter after a melee occurred between players on the ground.

“A subsequent incident shortly after involving spectators and a junior boundary umpire, which was reported to SAPOL, also is being investigated by SANFL.

“SANFL Juniors has a strict code of conduct for players and spectators which is fully supported and enforced by clubs.

“SANFL takes any breaches of this code of behaviour extremely seriously.

“No further comment will be made on the incidents while they are under investigation.”

Australia’s violence

The brawl in South Australia is the latest in a string of incidents at local and professional sport across the country.

Four men recently appeared in a Queensland court accused of assaulting a spectator in a “feeding frenzy” at a junior rugby league game.

A Brisbane father was left with serious facial injuries.

Meanwhile, Adelaide Oval was the site of an altercation between fans at an AFL game between Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs last weekend.

Vision showed six punches being thrown during a confrontation between two men.
