Mum and daughter, 5, were on pedestrian crossing before fatal car accident

Emergency services were met with a ‘distressing scene’ after the pair’s nighttime walk ended in the little girl’s tragic death.

7NEWS Update: March 18

A five-year-old girl has died after she and her mother were struck by a car while walking over a pedestrian crossing in Sydney’s west.

Emergency services were called to Rooty Hill Road North in Plumpton about 7.20pm on Wednesday following reports the pair had been hit by a Toyota Tarago while walking home from the shops.

Detective Chief Inspector Sean Gabin said the 25-year-old woman was treated at the scene by paramedics for “several serious breaks to her tibia and pelvis” as well as some spinal injuries.

The driver, a 61-year old man, who stopped at the scene, was uninjured but treated by paramedics for shock.

He was then taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory testing.

The man assisted police with their inquiries before he was released pending further investigations.

‘Too early to say’

Gabin said it was “too early to say” whether charges would be laid as investigations were ongoing.

“Obviously it’s an accident, no one means to go and do these type of things so that’s obviously something that we will be looking at,” he told reporters on Thursday.

A local resident told 7NEWS that the stretch of road was “notorious for people getting hit by cars”.

“Something definitely needs to be done about this road,” he said.

Gabin urged motorists to “drive to the conditions” during periods of extreme weather.

“It was obviously a distressing scene, anyone that goes to a scene where someone has died is obviously distressing, and it’s more distressing when you see a small child that has obviously got serious injuries and later dies,” he said.

“We’ve offered our staff trauma support and that will be ongoing.

“You can never prepare yourself for that type of incident.”
