UPDATE: A man in his 70s from Sydney’s eastern suburbs has died after contracting COVID-19, as Tuesday’s case numbers are announced.

There were 112 new cases of coronavirus detected by NSW Health in the 24 hours to 8pm on Sunday.

The vast majority are close contacts or relatives of existing cases, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

Thirty-four cases were active in the community throughout their full infectious period while a further 12 were active for part of their infectious period.

Eighteen others are continuing to be interviewed by NSW Health.

Berejiklian said driving this number down was crucial to lifting lockdown.

“That is the number that we need to see as close to zero as possible before health will advise the government that the lockdown can end,” she said.

There were more than 46,000 test results processed in the reporting period.

“I want to stress again we are in an absolutely critical phase of this disease,” Berejiklian said.

“All of us want to get out of this lockdown as soon as we can.

“All of us want to reduce the stress we are all feeling, the future is in our hands.”

The last time there were more than 100 cases in a single day in New South Wales was April last year.
