New South Wales records four local cases of COVID, mask requirements extended

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has ramped up restrictions after the new cases were found.

Masks made mandatory on public transport in Sydney

Four local coronavirus cases have been reported in New South Wales on Sunday.

Two were reported in the 24 hours to 8pm on Saturday while two were reported overnight.

Two attended Westfield Bondi Junction and spent time in Wollongong, while two are close contacts of previously reported cases and had been in isolation.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the continuous spread of cases meant mask requirements would be ramped up.

Previously, masks had only been mandatory on public transport in the Greater Sydney and Blue Mountains areas.

That is now being extended to include the Wollongong and Shellharbour council areas from 4pm.

In addition, masks will be mandatory in all public indoor venues in seven Local Government Areas

The mask mandate includes retail, theatres, aged care facilities and for front-of-house hospitality staff.

Berejiklian said the rules could be taken further if cases continue to emerge in the community.

“As we heard in previous days on a few occasions it has been a fleeting exchange,” Berejiklian said.

“[It] is extremely contagious and some people are spreading it more than others and what we want to avoid at this stage is a super spreading event.”

It comes after the number of exposure sites grew significantly overnight.

Thirteen new venues were added to the list, amid fears “fleeting contact” would increase transmission.
