Sydney Speedway fans up in arms over plan to demolish site for Sydney Metro

The end is nigh for a mecca of speedway racing in New South Wales.

Shocked fans of Sydney Speedway at Granville are angry over the news that their track is to be wiped out to make way for the Sydney Metro West rail line.

The operators are devastated at the way they were told and are taking little comfort from the promise of a new home.

The the only premier speedway venue left in New South Wales is being turned into a Metro stabling yard.

Now known as the Valvoline Raceway, the venue has been around since 1977.

The call from the NSW government came on Monday, leaving speedway fans in shock.

Current sprint car champion Sammy Walsh says the announcement "caught everybody by surprise."

He's part of three generations of the Walsh family who have competed in speedway.

Emotional speedway fans have treated the track like a shrine - people's ashes have even been scattered at the beloved venue.

It's a sport that's been evicted from its home before, but always managed to stay upright.

"We just need somewhere to race," one supporter said.

The state government has promised the sport a new home in Western Sydney, most likely at Eastern Creek.

"The community and racing fans can be assured that the NSW government remains absolutely committed to relocating speedway racing in Sydney," Transport Minister Andrew Constance said in a statement released on Tuesday.

"The NSW government owns sufficient land in western Sydney to accommodate a new speedway facility."

An online petition to save the speedway had more than 20,000 signatures on Tuesday night.
