The fuel excise tax cut, which halved the tax for six months under the former Morrison government, rolls to an end on Wednesday.

Petrol prices are expected to rise in response, as station stockpiles of cheaper fuel eventually dwindle. That could take days, even weeks in some rural areas.

Once it does, it will eventually cost about $15 more to fill up a 60-litre tank with petrol for the average driver. For people who fill up weekly, that equals an extra $60 expense every month.

Kean addressed drivers on Tuesday, detailing how they can save $800 a year at the bowser.

“This Wednesday the fuel excise discount will come to an end, and this will see petrol prices rise across New South Wales, and indeed across the country, by about 20 cents a litre,” Kean said.

“There’s never been a better time to start saving money at the bowser.

“That’s why we’re encouraging people to get online and start downloading the New South Wales government’s FuelCheck app.”

The app provides real-time information about petrol prices, comparing them to find the cheapest option near you.

Kean says, that suburb-to-suburb, the price of petrol can vary up to 20c per litre.

“That means if you’re filling up and finding the cheapest petrol station in your suburb, you could save up to $800 a year,” he said.

“Or, $10 on every time you fill up.”

NSW Customer Service and Digital Government Minister Victor Dominello said: “That’s a serious amount you can save by making informed decisions.”

Australia-wide savings

Across Australia, fuel price comparison apps and websites offer a similar service and can help you save hundreds at the fuel pump over the year.

In Tasmania, the local government also offers the FuelCheck app, the Western Australian government offers FuelWatch, and The Northern Territory government offers MyFuel.

In Victoria, a fuel map and price comparison tool from RACV shows you where to find the cheapest petrol and discount offers.

In South Australia, the RAA also offers a fuel price comparison app.

The Queensland government offers a list of comparison apps that function across the state, and in the ACT motorists looking to fill up can head to PetrolSpy.
