Man charged over crash that killed teenagers in Ashcroft

A man has been charged over a horrific crash that killed two teenagers in Sydney’s southwest.

The two victims were earlier identified as a 13-year-old boy and 14-year-old boy.

They were in the back seat of a car which crashed into a tree and power pole outside a home on Maxwells Ave, Ashcroft on Monday morning.

One of the boys was thrown from the vehicle on impact, while the other was held in by his seatbelt.

It is believed speed was a factor in the crash.

Two men, aged 23 and 27, were arrested about 12.30pm on Tuesday.

Police on Wednesday said the 27-year-old, who was initially taken to hospital and later released, has been charged with nine offences including two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death.

He was also charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, two counts of failing to stop and assist, never being licensed, causing bodily harm by misconduct and negligent driving.

He was refused bail to appear before Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday.

No charges have yet been laid against the second arrested man.

Meanwhile, online tributes are pouring in for the two teens with loved ones describing the crash as “heartbreaking”.

The two teenagers were reportedly best mates. One had only just celebrated his 13th birthday on Sunday.

The families issued a statement on Tuesday night.

“Both of our families are still in shock and devastated over yesterday’s tragic crash. We are continuing to come to terms with the loss of our much-loved son and brother,” it read.

“We ask for privacy at this time, and we will not be conducting any media interviews while the police investigation continues.”
