NSW police officer in serious condition in pursuit gone wrong

A NSW police officer has been left hospitalised after a pursuit went terribly wrong on Wednesday night.

Around 7pm Wednesday, a police officer in the Hunter Valley was chasing a trail bike rider along the on the New England Highway at Maitland.

The officer was on foot and the trail bike rider ran into him.

He was left “seriously injured’ with leg fractures, and arm, head, pelvic and spinal injuries.

The constable had to be rushed to hospital by air ambulance.

The police officer is now in the nearby John Hunter Hospital where his condition is serious but stable.

Meanwhile, the trail bike rider, aged in his 20s, was arrested soon afterwards.

He was also taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

He is being guarded by police.

The crash investigation unit is looking into the case.
