Victoria’s streak of more than 50 days without a local case of coronavirus has come to an end.

Midday COVID-19 Update - April 23

Victoria’s run of more than 50 days without a locally acquired coronavirus case has come to an end.

A man returning from Western Australia tested positive for COVID-19 about 2am on Friday, Health Minister Martin Foley said.

He had served two weeks in hotel quarantine in Perth where he was in an adjacent room to a confirmed case. It is currently unclear where he had travelled from to require quarantine.

WA Health notified him that he was a close contact and, despite being asymptomatic, he requested to be moved to hotel quarantine while awaiting his test result.

Foley said it was too soon to say whether he had passed on the virus to others.

The man lives in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs with his partner and two children.

All of his close contacts will now isolate and quarantine for a full 14 days.

Those on the flight Qantas QF778 from Perth to Melbourne on Wednesday will be contacted and need to follow the same advice.

“We will be examining the gentleman’s movements, particularly through the airport, where he did where a mask, as he did on the flight,” Foley said.

“It just goes to show here is a gentleman who did exactly the right thing, showed no signs of the illness and as a result of our friends in WA notifying him and notifying us we were able to immediately get on to this case.”

It’s understood additional health authorities were mobilised at the domestic terminal of Tullamarine Airport on Friday morning.

Foley said contact tracing teams would be stood up to determine whether there were any exposure sites.

“If there are exposure sites or further information to become availability, we will of course through our public health team share that information with the people of Victoria,” he said.

“This is an important and timely reminder that all of us that this global pandemic is not over.”

He said the man’s limited movements as a positive sign there had been no further spread.

“Victorians have been down this path before. Victorians know the drill.

“We can get through this by supporting our public health team, by following our public health measures and making sure we do the right thing to keep this one case at the moment, hopefully early, hopefully run down the primary close contacts, and stay on top of this very early.”
