Queensland records new COVID-19 case in community, linked to Gold Coast cluster

The case is linked to a known cluster but is feared to have been in the community while infectious.

QLD border reopening brought forward in time for Christmas

Queensland has recorded a new locally acquired case of COVID-19, with a person linked to a cluster on the Gold Coast testing positive.

The Gold Coast man is the only local case on Tuesday, coming a day after the state government announced the border will reopen to COVID-19 hotspots on December 13.

The Gold Coast cluster, first identified last week, now stands at four cases.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the new patient is likely to have been in the community for “a number of days” while potentially infectious.

He is also believed to have travelled recently from New South Wales.

“This may end up being the source of this cluster,” Ms D’Ath said.

“Having said that, there is still a risk on the Gold Coast because a number of these cases have been in the community for a number of days.”

Contact tracers are still working to gain information on the movements of the new patient.

More exposure sites are expected to be listed.

On Monday, the state government announced it will scrap quarantine for all fully vaccinated domestic travellers from virus hotspots who test negative to COVID-19 from 1am on Monday.

There will be no restrictions on travellers who have not recently visited hotspots, meaning it will be the first time Queensland has been open to all Australians since April 28, when it shut its border to Greater Melbourne.
