Sydney driver who ran down and killed cyclist at Lidcombe walks free from court following expert evidence

A Sydney driver who ran down and killed a cyclist before driving from the scene as he lay dying has walked free from court.

Vonny Ho, 49, was charged over the death of 66-year-old cyclist Raymond Rawiri in Lidcombe in May 2019.

At the time, the 49-year-old was driving on Harry Avenue and Maud Street when Rawiri went over her bonnet.

She didn’t realise because the sun was in her eyes, a claim that was backed up by an expert.

Ho left the scene after reversing over Rawiri’s bike and later turned herself into police after seeing news reports on TV later that night.

She was initially charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, which was later dropped.

Ho faced Burwood Court on Monday where a second charge of negligent driving causing death was withdrawn.

The 49-year-old hugged her lawyer Eidan Havas outside the courtroom when she was told proceedings against her would stop.

“There is no vindication,” Havas said outside court.

“Somebody has died, our thoughts and prayers go to the victim and his family.”

Her lawyer added she’s extremely remorseful for what happened.

“She’s gravely sorry,” he said.

“Unfortunately, she has been receiving death threats as a result of this incident and she just wants to get on with her life.”

The is set to return to court in eight weeks, where Ho’s lawyers will apply for legal costs.
