Two charged after detective injured during shootout at Neutral Bay Woolworths carpark

Two men have been charged after they allegedly drove a vehicle at police, causing cops to discharge a ‘number of bullets’ their way.

Two men have been arrested and charged after police opened fire in a Woolworths carpark in Sydney’s lower north shore on Monday afternoon.

The officers were conducting a drug operation in Neutral Bay targeting two men.

As they went to arrest the pair, aged 24 and 25, the men got into their car and drove at police.

Police fired “a number of bullets” which hit the car, causing it to crash into a bollard and come to a stop.

A detective was injured in the dramatic arrest, as he was hit by the car before he could fire from his gun.

He suffered minor injuries to his legs, elbows and wrists, but did not need medical treatment.

The men were taken to the nearby Chatswood police station.

On Tuesday morning, police charged the two men.

The car’s driver, 25, was charged with using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and reckless, dangerous driving.

The younger man was charged with possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawful, border controlled drug, and dealing with identity information to commit indictable offence.

Witnesses said they heard the gunfire.

“There were two really loud shots that went off,” a witness told 7NEWS.

“I didn’t even realise there were gunshots until police pulled up.

“Nothing like that has ever happened the whole time I lived here.”

The men are due in court on Tuesday.

Both men have been refused bail.
