Victoria records 394 more coronavirus cases as 17 people die from the disease

Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed the shocking numbers on Sunday.

Seventeen people have died from COVID-19 in Victoria in the deadliest 24-hour period of the pandemic in Australia.

The state has also recorded 394 cases of coronavirus overnight on Sunday.

Of the 17 people who have died from the disease in the past 24 hours, 10 are linked to outbreaks aged care homes.

The new cases on Sunday come after another 466 cases were confirmed the previous day.

The number of deaths recorded on Sunday eclipses the previous highest daily death toll of 15 recorded in the state on August 5.

The latest victims include two men in their 50s and four men in their 70s.

Four women and two men in their 80s have also died, as well as two women and three men in their 90s.

“To each of those families, we send our sincere condolences, our sympathies, our best wishes,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

“I want them to know they are in our thoughts and prayers, as we continue to do everything we possibly can to deal with this second wave.”

There are 634 Victorians in hospital with COVID-19, including 43 who are in intensive care.

The state’s death toll has risen to 210 and the nationwide tally to 295.
