South Australia COVID alert issued after virus fragments found in wastewater

The alert comes as the city plays host to a range of events, including the Adelaide Festival, the Fringe festival and WOMADelaide.
Deputy Public Health Officer Chris Lease said the “very strong reading” had come from north-eastern part of Adelaide’s CBD, north of Pirie Street. 

South Australian has been put on alert after testing of Adelaide’s wastewater returned a “very strong” positive results.

SA Health made the announcement on Sunday and said the result may have come from a medi-hotel resident or an old case who is still “shedding”.

Deputy Public Health Officer Chris Lease said the “very strong reading” had come from north-eastern part of Adelaide’s CBD, north of Pirie Street.

The alert comes as the city plays host to a range of events, including the Adelaide Festival, the Fringe festival and WOMADelaide.

The positive samples were collected on Thursday and Friday.

“It’s important for people to not only monitor symptoms quite closely and not to attend (events) or go out, but to stay home and get tested,” Lease said.

“If we can take this seriously — and I hope that we find ourselves in a positive situation that it’s an old case — but we can’t rely on that, so it’s really down to everyone to stay COVID-safe and use this as a reminder of that.”

The state recorded no new COVID cases on Sunday, there were three active cases in hotel quarantine.
