An arrest has been made over the cold case murder of a man in Sydney in 2008.

Bernd Lehmann, 66, was found dead in his Ashfield apartment on Valentine’s Day more than a decade ago.

The Homicide Squad probed the death but no arrest was ever made.

That changed on Wednesday when new information was brought to light by a recent offer of a $1 million reward.

New South Wales Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty called the day a “significant breakthrough”.

He said the suspect, a 66-year-old man, was arrested in Arncliffe about 7.30am.

The information acquired by the person who came forward to claim the reward helped police make the arrest.

“It’s every bit of information that we use,” Doherty said.

“DNA is one part of evidence but we have to have that person being linked to Bernd Lehmann.

“We had some focus but with the strategy that we used, we were able to have links to (the suspect) and the crime scene.”

He did not reveal how the suspect and Lehmann knew each other and instead referred to them as having “casual contact”.

The suspect is being questioned by police and is likely to be charged later in the afternoon.

Lehmann’s family, many of whom live in Germany, received the news with “mixed feelings”, Doherty said.
