Violent incident caught on camera at Bankstown carpark

A driver has been charged after allegedly crashing into multiple cars and assaulting police in a packed carpark in Sydney’s southwest.

Officers first attempted to stop a white Toyota Hiace after it allegedly drove through a red light on Stacey Street in Bankstown about 12.30pm on Wednesday.

But the van failed to stop and took off into a carpark near Bankstown Central, police allege.

When officers attempted to approach the man on foot, he allegedly continued driving, before hitting a parked car and narrowly missing the officers, who managed to jump out of the way.

In vision captured by witnesses, the van can then be seen crashing into six more parked cars before coming to a stop.

The driver was then seen being dragged from the front seat of the vehicle by police, who allege the man struggled with the officers before assaulting them.

Further police arrived and once he was arrested, police allegedly located a small amount of cannabis in the man’s possession.

Witnesses say there was a large number of people and children in the area at the time.

One of the officers suffered a facial injury but did not require treatment.

The 20-year-old was charged with several offences including driving in a dangerous manner, resisting arrest, assaulting police, driving whilst suspended and possessing a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Thursday.
